SPRINGFIELD, IL — Families across central Illinois have a long menu of Halloween and fall activities to pick from this month, with trunk-or-treats, zoo celebrations and neighborhood-style gatherings scheduled in several communities.

The list includes events in Springfield, Decatur, Danville, Normal, Mt. Pulaski and Urbana, along with multiple dates at Scovill Zoo in Decatur and special Halloween programming at Henson Robinson Zoo in Springfield. Organizers are still adding events, so the schedule is expected to grow as October continues.

Many of the gatherings are designed to give children a safe place to collect candy and enjoy costumes, while adults can take part in community-centered seasonal activities. Some events require reservations or have an admission fee, so families will want to check the details before heading out.

Zoo celebrations anchor the October calendar in Decatur and Springfield

Two zoos are playing a major role in the region’s Halloween lineup. Scovill Zoo in Decatur is hosting repeated editions of Boo at the Zoo throughout the month, with reserved entry required for each visit. Dates listed include October 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25, 29 and 30, with different time windows depending on the day.

On October 23 and October 24, Henson Robinson Zoo in Springfield is offering Zoolie Ghoulie, with a $5 admission charge. The event runs from 1 to 8 p.m. on October 23 and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 24, giving families a broad window to stop by.

These attractions give families structured Halloween outings beyond the standard night-of trick-or-treating. They also spread the fun across several days, which can help parents choose a time that fits their schedules.

Springfield hosts trunk-or-treats at churches, businesses and community groups

Springfield has one of the busiest schedules on the calendar, with events spread across the city and offered by a mix of businesses, churches and community organizations. Damon Pridd State Farm is set to host a trunk-or-treat on October 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 2951 Montvale Dr.

Other Springfield gatherings include Springfield Karate on October 17 from 1 to 3 p.m., The Center for Youth and Family Solutions on October 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Immanuel Lutheran Church on October 24 from 4 to 6 p.m., and RE/MAX Professionals on October 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Women Entrepreneurs of Central Illinois will also host a trunk-or-treat at Denney Jewelers on October 28 from 5 to 7 p.m.

On October 31, Urbana Firefighters Local #1147 will hold its annual trunk-or-treat and car show at Vineyard Church of Central Illinois in Urbana, adding another late-month option for families looking for a festive daytime outing.

Decatur and Danville add their own neighborhood-style Halloween stops

Decatur families have several choices beyond the zoo events. American Legion Post 210 is scheduled to host a trunk-or-treat on October 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will hold its event on October 25 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Decatur Family YMCA is set for October 29 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and Central Christian Church will host a trunk-or-treat on Halloween day from 1 to 3 p.m. Each gathering offers a different time slot, which may make it easier for parents to build a full day around the events.

Danville also appears on the list with two trunk-or-treats. American Legion Post 210’s Danville location will host one on October 17, and a separate event is planned for October 22 at 300 W. Fairchild, where Dollar General, Papa John’s, Taylor SELFIE’s and the Joint Smoke Shop are listed as participants.

Normal, Mt. Pulaski and Urbana join the regional lineup

Several smaller communities are also taking part in the seasonal calendar. The Humane Society of Central Illinois is planning a trunk-or-treat in Normal on October 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 423 Kays Dr. That gives animal lovers and families another local option later in the month.

Mt. Pulaski is hosting its trunk-or-treat on October 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. on the west side of the square, keeping the event centered in the heart of town. For many families, that kind of downtown setting adds a familiar neighborhood feel to the holiday season.

Urbana’s October 31 event stands out as a combined trunk-or-treat and car show, giving children candy and costumes alongside classic vehicles. With multiple communities participating, the region’s Halloween calendar offers a broad mix of simple, family-friendly choices.

Some events require reservations, and times vary from afternoon to evening

Not every event works the same way, and families will need to pay attention to the details. Boo at the Zoo at Scovill Zoo requires reservations, and Zoolie Ghoulie at Henson Robinson Zoo carries a $5 admission charge. Those are the clearest examples of events that need a little planning before arrival.

Times vary widely, too. Some events begin in the morning, such as the Danville American Legion event on October 17, while others run into the evening, like the Springfield and Decatur gatherings scheduled for after school and after work hours. That range makes it easier for families to find something that fits their day.

The growing list also suggests that more events may still be announced. For local parents, grandparents and caregivers, that means October remains a moving target — and a good month to keep checking for updated Halloween plans.
