MAYSVILLE – Doing the little things right could mean the difference between winning or losing a ball game for a team. The Bray-Doyle Donkeys’ football team did just that Friday night in their 36-28 win over the Maysvile Warriors.

“We have been preaching that everyday,” Bray-Doyle head football coach Marcus Knight said. “We have to do the little things right if we want to succeed this season. We have to limit our mistakes and do all the little things to be successful.”

This season the donkeys are upperclassmen heavy with nine seniors and five juniors on the 24-man squad. The upperclassmen showed their leadership by making some big plays down the stretch.

“I think Mark Kilbourn had a really great night running the ball for us,” Knight said. “Justin (Miller) and Joe (Lumbert) made some big plays for us as well both on offense and defense. We just kept on them all night, and I couldn’t be prouder of our guys.”

Miller finished the game completing three of his six passes for 113 yards with two touchdowns. Lumbert was the main target with six receptions for 202 yards with three touchdowns.

Miller said it felt good to start the season off with a win but is looking forward to what is in store for the remainder of the season.

“We’re excited to get this win tonight, Miller said. “It is always a good feeling to start the season with a win, but we’re excited for the next game. We just want to take it one game at a time and keep the momentum going.”

Kilbourn, who led the way rushing with 16 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns, echoed his quarterback’s sentiments about winning the first game. He also credited the win to his other teammates, and coaches.

“It was definitely a team win for us tonight,” Kilbourn said. “Our linemen were making blocks and opening up holes. We had Tyler (Anderson) and Tully (Booth) stepping up along with other underclassmen. Also, Coach Knight and Coach Coles were keeping us focused and getting us in the right position to win.”
